A large cap company might have saturated its market, whereas a mid cap company will still have room to grow into a large cap company. Your investment will be a successful investment if while buying the mid cap stock you took into consideration the potential for it to grow into a large cap stock.

As an individual it is difficult and tedious to search for such mid cap companies which have the potential to grow into large caps. The alternate route available is to invest in MidCap mutual funds. There are many MidCap mutual funds. Over the long run they achieve greater returns. You cannot expect such returns in the short term. There is a possibility of short term returns being very volatile. If you are a good stock picker and can identify such companies then you can go along and invest in potential Mid Caps. The returns will also be more than what you would have got thru the mutual fund route.
